The Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia has proceeded with the installation of a new sculpture on the coastal pedestrian street of Protaras.
The sculpture was donated to the Municipality by sculptor Philippos Giapanis as a token of appreciation for hosting the Exhibition "50 years of memories, 30 years of the Sculptor's cry" last December at the Municipal Hall of Paralimni - Deryneia.
The Municipality of Paralimni - Deryneia intends to honor the donors at a special event that will be held in the near future.
The story of the Centaur Nessus
As Heracles and his wife Deianeira were trying to cross the river Evinus, the Centaur Nessus – who worked as a ferryman on the river – offered to carry Deianeira to the other side. However, as he was carrying her, he tried to kidnap her. Heracles, seeing what was happening, killed him from a distance with one of his poisoned arrows.
Before he died, Nessus, wanting revenge on Heracles, told Deianeira that his blood was a love potion and gave her some of it, telling her to use it if Heracles ever seemed unfaithful to her. Later, when Deianeira suspected that Heracles had fallen in love with Iole, she sent him a tunic soaked in Nessus' blood, which ultimately caused Heracles' painful death.
This myth is one of the best known in ancient Greek mythology and highlights the power of passion, revenge and tragic irony. The story of Deianeira and the death of Hercules are developed in Sophocles' tragedy "The Trachiniae".
