The contract for the construction of an extremely important project for the protection of the environment and public health, as well as for the avoidance of the risk of loss of both national and community resources, was signed today, in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mr. Costas Kadis . This is the design, construction and operation of the long-awaited "Achna Wastewater Treatment Plant", which will serve the Municipalities of Deryneia and Sotira, the communities of Xylofagos, Xylotympos and Ormidia, Larnaca District, as well as the communities of Agios Geos, Agios Geos , Achna, Liopetri, Frenaros, of the Province of Famagusta.
Mr. Costas Kadis, in his statements after the signing of the Contract stated: “It is a very important project which we have been waiting for many years. This project helps us to meet very important obligations of our country towards the European Union. It is known that Cyprus lags behind in the issue of wastewater management. However, the construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Achna is a decisive step for Cyprus to be able to show a significant progress ". The Minister also stated that he discussed this issue with the competent Commissioner for Environmental Affairs in a meeting he had with him in Brussels. "It is an issue that concerns the European Commission, as well as us, of course, and it is very positive that we have had to make significant progress in this area," said Mr. Kadis.
The cost of Design and Construction of the Project amounts to 24.833.365 Euros and includes the construction of a Joint Sewage Treatment Plant, with a capacity of 10.644 sq.m. per day, which will be located within the boundaries of the Achna Community, northeast of the Achna Dam. The award of the Contract for the Design and Construction of the Project was assigned to the Company CYFIELD ENGINEERING AND CONTRACTING PUBLIC LTD and the duration of the Contract amounts to 22 months. The Agreement was signed on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus by the Director of the Water Development Department, Dr. Charalambos Hatzipakkos and on behalf of the Contractor, the General Manager of CYFIELD ENGINEERING AND CONTRACTING PUBLIC LTD, Mrs. Despina Chrysochou.
At the same time, the Contract was signed between the Sewerage Council of Kokkinochorion (SAK) and the Company CYFIELD ENGINEERING AND CONTRACTING PUBLIC LTD for the operation and maintenance of the Station for a period of 20 years with a total cost of 18.863.418.64 Euros and the amount of 610.000 Euros related to purchase of equipment. The said Agreement was signed on behalf of the Sewerage Council of Kokkinochorion (SAK), the Mayor of Deryneia and President of SAK, Mr. Andros Karagiannis, and on behalf of CYFIELD ENGINEERING AND CONTRACTING PUBLIC LTD, the General Manager, Mr. Desypos.
Upon completion, the Project is expected to make a catalytic contribution to the protection of the environment and underground resources, the protection of public health and the improvement of the living standard of citizens. The reuse of treated urban wastewater and sludge by farmers and ranchers operating in the area as well as the creation of new jobs are also among the significant benefits of the Project.
The Sewerage System of the Kokkinochorio Complex, began to be implemented in the Programming Period 2007-2013, when the construction of sewage collection networks in the Municipalities of Deryneia and Sotira and in eight communities of the Kokkinochorio Complex (approximately 313 km) was implemented, at a cost. The implementation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant was included as a "bridge" project in the Programming Period 44-2014 and is co-financed by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union, under the Priority Axis "Solid Waste and Water Resources Management" of the Operational Program "Sustainable Development" .
The implementation of the above Project will be carried out in the context of harmonization of Cyprus with the European Directive 91/271 / EEC, which requires the construction of central sewerage systems in communities with an equivalent population of more than 2.000 (total permanent, seasonal and tourist population). The Beneficiary of the Project is the Department of Water Development, the Intermediate Body is the Audit Department of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works and the Owner of the Project is the Kokkinochoria Sewerage Council.
