287 marriages per 1000 end in divorce according to data published by the Statistical Service of Cyprus, a fact that should cause concern since at the same time marriages are increasing year by year.

According to the data of S.Y. for 2015, 13.600 marriages took place, of which 4,175 were ecclesiastical and 8,831 were political.

The number of civil marriages should not be surprising since only 1,917 of them concerned permanent residents of Cyprus.

The total number of permanent residents of Cyprus who got married in 2015 was 6,092, a fact that increases the marriage rate by 7,2 per 1000 people.

For 79,6% of the permanent residents of Cyprus who got married in 2015 it was their first marriage, for 13,5% it was the first marriage for one of the two and for 6,5% it was the second marriage and for both.

Age

The average age for men is 31 years and for women 29,3. In relation to ecclesiastical marriages, the average age of marriage for men is 31,5 and for women 29,4. In relation to civil marriages, the average age of marriage for men is 29,8 and for women 29,1.

However, according to data in rural areas, the age index is much lower than in cities.

Facts about civil marriages

Regarding civil marriages in 43,9% one of the two members of the couple was a foreigner. At 25,2% the groom was Cypriot and the bride foreign while at 7,8% the bride was Cypriot and the groom foreign. The percentage in civil marriages with the two people being Cypriots was only 23,1%.

The first nationalities of foreign men who got married in our country in 2015 were:

• Hellas
• Romania
• Bangladesh

Regarding women, the first nationalities to have a civil marriage in Cyprus were:

• Romania
• Bulgaria
• Russia
• Philippines

Divorce

Divorces in our country tend to be a big scourge, despite the increase in marriages, since according to the data of S.Y. 287 marriages out of 1000 end in divorce. Specifically, the divorce rate rose to 2,14 while in 2015 1807 divorces were issued.

The average duration of divorces ending in divorce is 9 years while most divorced couples lived in urban areas.

A typical example is the fact that 78,5% of those who divorced lived in cities while 19,1% in villages.

Of the divorced couples, 43,3% had no children under the age of 18, 29,2% had only one child, 17,2% had two children and 6,1% had 3 children or more.
