A 30-year-old mother from Deryneia was found dead

A 30-year-old hotel employee, a Greek expatriate, mother of three three-and-a-half-year-old boys, aged 6 and 9, who were at school at the time, was found dead in her apartment in Deryneia in the morning.

In his statements, the spokesman of the Famagusta Police Department, George Oikonomou, stated that "today around 10:15 in the morning, information was given by citizens that smoke was emerging from the floor of an apartment in Deryneia. "Men from the Police and the Fire Service went on the spot, who were forced to break the kitchen window to enter the house, since they were locked".

He added that "the source of the smoke was located in the bedroom of the apartment and specifically in the bed on which was an unconscious young woman. The fire was extinguished by the Fire Service, while a doctor was called to the scene, who found that the 30-year-old woman was dead ".

Mr. Oikonomou noted that "it was found that the unfortunate woman, who comes from Georgia, is divorced and the mother of three minor children, while her parents live in Greece. The medical examiner Eleni Antoniou was called to the scene, who performed an autopsy and ruled out the possibility of criminal action ".

He also stated that "from the examinations carried out by the Police, it was found that the fire was caused by a lit cigarette butt. The exact causes of death of the young woman will be ascertained tomorrow during the legal autopsy, which will be performed at the Larnaca General Hospital by the medical examiner Eleni Antoniou ".

When asked about this, Mr. Oikonomou answered that "the girl only had slight burns on one of her hands", while next to the bed the Police found an ashtray and cigarettes.

According to the medical examiner Eleni Antoniou, "a dead woman was found, with burns, who was dressed in bed lying horizontally. Criminal activity is excluded. It seems that the fire started from a lit cigarette in the bed and the woman has burns on her right hand and on the right part of her head ".

Answering a relevant question, Ms. Antoniou said that the girl probably died from fumes, but this will be known during the autopsy.
