Unemployment in Cyprus at 7,6% in the third quarter of 2011

According to the latest figures from the Labor Statistics Service, released today, the unemployment rate was 7,6% of the workforce (men 7,4% and women 7,9%), an increase from the previous quarter of 2011 when the percentage was 7,1% (men 7,2% and women 7,0%) and the corresponding quarter of 2010 when the percentage was 5,8% (men 5,7% and women 5,9% ).

The analysis of the unemployed by age shows that the unemployment rate is higher for young people aged 15-24 where it reached 22,3% of the workforce of these ages (men 22,1% and women 22,5%). In the 2nd quarter of 2011 the percentage was 20,6% (men 22,2% and women 19,1%) while in the 3rd quarter of 2010 the percentage was 13,0% of the workforce of these ages (men 13,0% and women 12,9%).

Regarding the duration of unemployment, 48,7% of the total unemployed were looking for work for a period of less than 6 months, 27,5% for a period of 6-11 months, while 23,8% were looking for work for a year and above. The corresponding percentages for the 2nd quarter of 2011 were (56,3%, 26,7%, 17,0%) while for the 3rd quarter of 2010 they were (53,8%, 24,1% and 22,1%) .

Based on the results of the Labor Force Survey, conducted in accordance with European Regulations, for the 3rd quarter of 2011, the number of employees amounted to 372,5 thousand people (men 204,8 thousand and women 167,6 thousand) and the number of the unemployed to 30,8 thousand people (men 16,4 thousand and women 14,5 thousand).

The employment rate, ie the number of employees aged 20-64 as a percentage of the population aged 20-64, was 73,1%. The corresponding percentage for men was 80,2% and for women 66,0%. In the 2nd quarter of 2011 the percentage was 74,9% (men 81,6%, women 68,3%) while in the 3rd quarter of 2010 the percentage was 75,7% (men 83,1%, women 68,3% ).

According to the distribution of employment by sector, the largest percentage of employees was collected by services with 74,6%, while industry followed with 21,6% and finally agriculture with only 3,8%. In the second quarter of 2, 2011% were employed in services, 74,7% in industry and 21,3% in agriculture. In the 4,0rd quarter of 3 the respective percentages were: services 2010%, industry 75,4% and agriculture 20,7%.

Part-time employment accounted for 9,4% of total employment or 35.075 people (men 7,3% and women 11,9%). In the 2nd quarter of 2011 the percentage of part-time employment was 9,9% (men 7,4% and women 12,9%) while the corresponding percentage for the 3rd quarter of 2010 was 8,9% (men 6,3% and women 12,0%).

Of those employed, 81,8% or 304.804 were employees (employees), of whom 13,8% had temporary work. The corresponding percentage for the 2nd quarter of 2011 was 81,5% (with temporary work 14,0%). In the 3rd quarter of 2010 employees accounted for 81,4% of total employment and of these 13,6% had temporary work.

The average regular working hours per week in the main job for full-time employees was 41,0 hours (men 41,7 and women 40,3 hours), while for part-time employees it was 21,3 hours (men 20,8 and women 21,5 hours). In the 2nd quarter of 2011 the corresponding hours for full-time employees were 41,1 hours (men 41,8 and women 40,4 hours), while for part-time employees it was 20,7 hours (men 20,2 and women 21,0 hours). In the 3rd quarter of 2010 the average regular working hours for full-time employees was 41,1 hours (men 41,8 and women 40,2 hours), while for part-time employees it was 21,4 hours (men 19,8 and women 22,2 hours).
