THE PLAY:
Written in the aftermath of World War II, the play deals with the issue of individual responsibility, bringing viewers face to face with a well-orchestrated police thriller. The premiere of the play is scheduled for October 12 and alongside Grigoris Valtinos, Odysseas Papaspiliopoulos will appear in the role of inspector, since in this particular ascent a different reading will be attempted, with a younger protagonist in the homonymous role.
John Presley staged his work in 1912, two years before the outbreak of World War I, making his prophecy self-evident. Two great wars will follow and verify what he said. From the future, comes the main character of the project, the inspector, whom scholars do not hesitate to call "angel of the future", since his arrival, presence and departure follow the circular, repeated trajectory of time. , a condition that Presley believed in and highlighted in almost all of his works: “Time is not linear. We understand things at the same time in the present and in the past and in a sense in the future. "
A large family celebrates the engagement of their daughter and father Arthur Burling finds the opportunity to argue in his favor that "every man should look after his own work and his own", but the arrival of a police inspector investigating the death of a poor girl will overturn any certainty, exposing the guilt of every member of the family towards society itself.
The Inspector's phrase: "We do not live alone, we are members of one body, we are responsible for each other", gives a timeless answer to the question of collectivity and especially to those who tried to discredit it with disgust like that of Margaret Thatcher, who, like another Arthur Berling, said in an interview in 1987: "There is no such thing as society.
