The Committee on Refugees of the Parliament was briefed today on the progress of the issue of the repair of the Monastery of Apostolos Andreas, by representatives of the Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage and representatives of Ministries and state Services…

DISY MP Kyriakos Hatzigiannis expressed restrained optimism regarding the course of the issue and said that the objective difficulty that exists should be taken into account, the "largely political dimension of the issue".

Unfortunately, he said, while there was a commitment to repair the Monastery in exchange for the repair of Tekke under an agreement with the UN, today we see this process being placed within the Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage. "In other words, we are ratifying the process by removing a role on the part of the UN that should have been the custodian of the implementation and realization of the commonly accepted plan based on the study of the University of Patras," he said.

We express our concern, said Mr. Hatzigiannis, because a new parameter is added based on which the progress of the repair of the Monastery is made in relation to the course of the good climate that may exist or should exist so as not to affect the works for the restoration of the Monastery.

"I believe that since there is nothing agreed upon other than the joint statement, everything is open," he said, adding that "we remain positive about the decision and the agreement reached at the level of the Technical Committee."

For her part, AKEL MP Skevi Koukouma expressed satisfaction with the information received by the Commission.

"Through the information we had, we feel that water has entered the ditch to start the procedures and projects, since the assignment to the Technical Committee will give the opportunity to start this work," he said.

He also expressed the hope that "there will be no new interventions that will cause obstacles in the issue".

"For us, it is important that the support of the part that faces problems begins immediately and then the goal is the implementation of the entire study of the University of Patras that concerns the complete restoration of the Monastery."
