Drilling in the occupied areas is illegal

Greek Foreign Minister Grigoris Delavekouras described the start of drilling by the Turkish Petroleum Company in the Sigrasi area of occupied Famagusta as a blatant violation of Turkish UN Security Council resolutions in a statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

According to the Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman, "the start of drilling of the Turkish Oil Company in the area of Sygkras in occupied Famagusta is another illegal Turkish act that blatantly violates the UN Security Council Resolutions, which call on all states to , independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus and not to recognize or in any way assist the illegal separatist entity in the occupied part of Cyprus ".

Mr. Delavekouras also notes that "this action highlights once again the fact that the Cyprus issue is primarily an international problem of invasion and occupation. We call on Turkey to finally make a practical contribution to finding a comprehensive and mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem in the framework of the agreed negotiation effort, based on the decisions of the UN Security Council and the status of Cyprus as a member state of the European Union.
