From the end of the month, retirees in Deryneia and in the wider free area of Famagusta will be able to enjoy their second home after the Retirement Club is completed. The construction work on the big project is over and these days, the cleaning crews have entered so that the building is ready by the end of February to welcome the survivors of the work.
After 12 years of waiting, the dream for retirees becomes a reality with the implementation of the Adult Center by the Municipality of Deryneia. The Retirees' Club consists of entertainment areas, a gym, a library, a multipurpose room, a cafeteria, a kitchen and a doctor's office. The works started at the end of November 2015 and were completed 15 months later on state land located next to the Monument of the Fallen, Murdered and Missing Deryneians of the Turkish invasion of 1974.
The project is approved by the Rural Development Program 2007-2013 and is co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development of the European Union and by the Municipality of Deryneia. It is recalled that the Municipality of Deryneia, with its steps to the Ministry of Interior and invoking the semi-ownership and acrimony, achieved the reduction of its expenditure from 33% which is the contribution to the co-financed projects, to 10% thus saving a significant amount.
The Center cost about 700.000 euros, two hundred thousand less than had been calculated and will operate as a regional Center since there is no other in the whole Province. It is a modern multipurpose space for the elderly which will provide infrastructure for day care and entertainment for the elderly. The mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, thanked through "X" all those who contributed to the implementation of the project.
He also stated that an application will be submitted for the registration of the Club in the Social Welfare Services in order to apply for a sponsorship to cover the operating expenses. The official opening is scheduled for April, while events are already scheduled for March.
