For the farmer

By Socrates Aristotle

It was May 1948, a happy spring morning. As a 16-year-old teenager, I was in Agios Memnon at the house of the late Tassos Arestis for a lesson in Byzantine music…

The lesson was over and we were sitting outside in the yard surrounded by blooming orange trees. The late Pope Sofronis, the then pastor of Ag. Memnona. The host started a conversation with the pope about the farmer and the difficulties he was facing at the time. And then Pope Sophronis, an old man whitened by the years, raised his hand, spoke and supported the farmer, and said that he should be supported because he is the backbone of the place and at one stage of his speech he said the following:

"The rosy hands of the farmer make the soil bread with which we all feed."

Although 64 years have passed, I always remember these words, seeing but also living the countless adversities that the farmer faces.
