First prize for the newspaper of the High School of Peace and Freedom

The first prize was won by the newspaper of the students of Sotiras-Deryneia High School "Peace and Freedom" in the school newspaper competition organized by the newspaper "FILELEFTHEROS".

In spite of the times, teenage journalists send messages of optimism. Through their newspapers, they comment, judge and submit proposals for a better tomorrow at school, in society, in the world.

Despite the financial crisis, many teachers gave their students the opportunity this year to create, to seek knowledge, to sharpen their thinking and, most importantly, to express themselves freely. In this year's student newspaper competition organized by the newspaper FILELEFTHEROS for the sixth consecutive year, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the European University, a total of 28 entries were submitted.

The award ceremony will take place on Monday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cultural Center of the European University in Nicosia. Young authors, teachers and their parents are officially invited. Below we announce the results:

High School Category

First Prize: Patterns, High School of Peace and Freedom.
The students of Deryneia and Sotira are innovating! They break the boundaries of the classroom, the school, the neighborhood, the city and with their journalistic discourse they travel everywhere. Throughout Cyprus, Crete, Larissa and Zakynthos, England, Jordan, and even distant Madagascar. The result of this year's wandering, gives them the first prize for which they worked hard and methodically for a long time. And let's not forget. With their newspaper, free of charge and the cd with the theatrical performance of the school "Ecclesiastes of Aristophanes".

Second prize: Apeitio o Topos, Apeitio Gymnasium Agrou.
This year, the young journalists of Agros made their first attempt to publish a newspaper. The effort succeeded with the above. The students of the high school managed to capture on paper topics from current affairs, society, education, sports, culture. We could say, in fact, that their front page was prophetic as the main topic was the problems of material and technical infrastructure of the school. The newspaper was published in March. In June, all the media covered the collapse of part of the gable of the High School.

Third prize: En Plo, Makedonitissa High School.
The journey continues for the editorial team of Makedonitissa High School, which characteristically states: "Our student community sailed for another year, sometimes crossing the calm waters of carelessness and fun and sometimes diving into the stormy seas of pain."

Praise: Student Step, Apostolos High School Andreas Embas and Student Speech, High School of Agios Theodoros Paphos.

Lyceum Category

First prize: Dasoupolitis, Lyceum of Archbishop Makarios III.
The newspaper of the students of Dasoupoli returns stronger and after six years conquers the top again. When in 2008 "FILELEFTHEROS" decided to announce for the first time the competition of student newspapers, Dasoupolitis had stood out from the first moment. The rich content, the distribution of the material, the pageantry, but mainly the subject matter impressed everyone. So this year too the critical pen of the young reporters fascinated the members of the jury. Among the texts that stand out, the front page of Maria Iakovou "You with your image and I with my burlot", the interview of the president of the Historical Dialogue and Research Group, the research for political asylum seekers, the report on the environment and so many more.

Second prize: Tritograph, Agios Ioannis Lyceum High School.
A rich and comprehensive newspaper. Reports, interviews, tributes, research and articles through the critical eye of young authors. During this year's edition, they experienced unique moments, as through a collective effort they managed to convey the voice of the entire student community and to express their concerns.

Third prize: Markou the Reading, Lyceum of Archangelos A. Markos.
"The new generation can express themselves, judge and face the difficulties that exist due to the moral and economic crisis that plagues our country and at the same time pass on to the next generations a world clearly better and more moral than what is handed down to it, thus proving that the best investment for a place is Education ". It is the optimistic message of the reporters of Archangelos High School.

Scholarships and gifts worth € 63.000

"FILELEFTHEROS" and the European University offer to this year's winners prizes with a total value of over € 63.000. The three newspapers of the Lyceum category will be awarded scholarships for studies at the European University as follows:

First prize: A full scholarship for all years of study worth € 34.000
Second prize: A scholarship worth 50% for all years of study worth € 17.000
Third prize: A scholarship worth 30% for all years of study worth € 10.200.
In the three newspapers of the Gymnasiums, computers will be provided, specifically from a laptop worth € 600.

In addition, the 28 schools that participated in this year's competition will receive the six-volume edition "History of Democracy", from the series "Library Publications of the Liberal".

It is clarified that the students who will receive the scholarships have the opportunity to choose any study program (with the exception of Medicine, Physiotherapy and Radiotherapy).
