Bionic eye with Greek signature

It gives hope to the blind

Science once again manages to compare itself to something unreal, as it promises, it may be able to give sight to the blind again…

This is what the Espresso newspaper reports today, referring to a seemingly revolutionary discovery of an expatriate professor in Australia, which gives hope to many people who have lost their sight, to see the light again…

Stan (Efstratios) Stafidas is currently head of research at NICTA, Australia's national research center, which holds awards for excellence in information and communication technologies. A resident of Melbourne and a graduate of the University of the same big city, he has, despite being only 40 years old, a brilliant career behind him, working, among other things, as a consultant for prominent communication and technology companies.

As the eminent scientist explains, the "bionic eye" is a neural prosthesis implanted in the macula, in the center of the retina. What it does is electrically stimulate the cells in order to give a sense of sight. So it's basically like having an external camera that allows you to see.

"Skafidas proves once again that where Greeks have the opportunity to work for the progress and development of science and humanity, they declare their dynamics and exaggerate in zeal," the newspaper notes.
