According to his information, two objections have already been submitted to the application submitted by Cyprus, while the possibility of submitting other objections expired at noon on Tuesday.
It is noted that there was a delay in the publication of the application in the EU newspaper. Specifically, while Brussels had to publish the file six months after the submission of the application by the Republic of Cyprus, finally the publication took place a year later.
An objection may be notified either by the Authorities of a Member State or a third country or by a natural or legal person having a legal interest established in a third country.
The Commission will give the right to those who objected to justify it within two months. Subsequently, a three-month consultation will be given between the opponent and the Republic of Cyprus. The Commission may extend the consultation period by a maximum of three months. It is estimated from the Cypriot side that these objections will not be accepted and so in the summer the halloumi is expected to be established as a PDO.
Representatives of the organization Bureau Veritas, which undertook the audit process, are currently in Cyprus. The delegates will hold a series of meetings with technocrats, in an effort to inform each other about the halloumi issue.
