Scientists study ancient Greek pottery for more durable spacecraft

Scientists are currently studying ancient Greek vessels that have their roots 2.500 years ago, believing that their properties could be useful in making more durable ceramic sheets for use in spacecraft αερο

Ceramic sheets are placed on the outside of spacecraft and robotic vessels to protect them from extreme temperatures (-120 ° C to 1650 ° C) when they enter the Earth's atmosphere. The high temperature that develops due to friction is capable of melting the metal and completely destroying the aircraft.

As scientists have found, the ceramic material of ancient Greek pottery not only withstands heat but also remains chemically stable. According to project leader Karen Trentalman, the fact that these objects are so old (5th-6th century BC) does not mean that they cannot be useful:

"It's not always necessary to be complicated to be sophisticated. If we understand the technology with which these works of art are made, we will be able to use them in a variety of applications. ”
