According to Sigma, the delay in the opening of the Deryneia and Lefka-Apliki roadblocks is due to reasons attributed to a highly political aspect of the issue.
As Sigma is aware, the long delay is due to the fact that the EU had not until recently found, as had been the case in previous cases, the necessary funds to be given to the UNDP, which would undertake the preparation of the dead zone.
And with that in mind, the United Nations has come up with something unprecedented. For road preparation purposes, the dead zone should be divided into two parts and the E / k and T / k side should take over from one part. Of course, something that the President's categorically rejected, not because of cost but because it would create a political precedent in relation to the ownership of the dead zone, which is territory given by the Greek Cypriot side.
In fact, until the final solution of the issue, all contact of the competent technical committee had been stopped. Eventually, we learn that the funds have been identified and the layout of the road in the dead zone will follow in the footsteps of other cases, namely through the UNDP, which will announce bids for bi-communal consortia. The completion schedule is set at four to five months.
