With the aim of zero waste production, the Municipality of Sotiras has started to implement and participate in programs that will turn it into a "Green Municipality" by 2016.

In his statements, the Mayor of Sotiras, Mr. Georgios Takkas on the occasion of the beginning of cooperation with Green Dot for the collection of recyclable materials door to door (Door 2 Door) stressed that the goal of the Municipality of Sotiras is zero waste production, something that will on the one hand, it will contribute to the ecological consciousness of the citizens, on the other hand, it will greatly reduce the taxes imposed on the inhabitants of Sotira.

A new collection system for recyclable PMD materials and door-to-door paper was launched in Sotira on May 1st, which will take place every Friday. At the same time, with its unanimous decision, the Municipal Council of Sotiras has approved the participation of the Municipality in the new plan announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment "I pay as much as I fly". According to Mayor Sotiras, this plan aims to control the volume of waste of each citizen, through special bags that will be supplied to citizens, with the imposition of taxation being fairer and lower than the existing one. The project is subsidized with a percentage of up to 95% by the Ministry of Agriculture, something that will not be particularly burdensome for the Municipality, while it is implemented with great success in the Municipality of Aglantzia.

At the same time, said Mr. Takkas, the administration of special composters in the houses is being studied, since according to a research, it has been proven that more than 40% of the waste of each house consists of soil, grass and other materials, which can be recycled. through the composter.

Another important project, as mentioned by Mayor Sotiras, is the creation of a Waste Transfer Station in Sotira. This station will be a provincial transfer station for garbage for the province of Famagusta, which will drastically reduce the cost of transporting waste to Kosi but also additional economic and compensatory benefits for the Municipality.

Mayor Sotiras underlined the fact that through these plans, every citizen of Sotira will feel more responsible for the production of his garbage, while the tax distribution will be fairer and lower than the already high tax paid, since this depends on the weight of the garbage transported to the Kos dump.
