A very different beach of Sirena will be seen this year by those who know the place, one of the most mysterious beaches of Protaras. On the beach there was an intervention by the Municipality of Paralimni, resulting in a radical change in its appearance, but also to provoke strong reactions from environmentalists and residents of Kokkinochoria, who talk about altering the character of the area and arbitrary action. At the same time, however, there are those who claim that the intervention of the Municipality of Paralimni brought beauty and order to the specific beach.
The intervention of the Municipality of Paralimni, in particular, consists in the construction of a triptych fencing south of the beach with natural stone, placement of additional sand and construction of a dirt road on the south side and a temporary dirt pedestrian street that passes in front of it. Also, again on the south side of the beach, reeds were removed, while generally from the natural hill that dominated it, at least 25 to 30 meters of volume were removed, thus opening its horizon to the west.
Asked to comment on the type of intervention of the Municipality of Paralimni on the beach of Siren, but also the reactions it provokes in some citizens, the mayor of Paralimni was strongly asserting the fact, in his opinion, that it is not an intervention, but its restoration natural environment on this beach. He also stated that "everything was done legally and with the consent of the Famagusta District Administration". Regarding the extension of the operation, which took place while the works were being carried out, Mr. Pyrillis pointed out that the removal of material from the beach was indeed extended, but it was also approved and is legal, while this action was done because "it was necessary".
Strongly insisting that the Siren beach was restored and not operated on, Mr. Pyrillis claimed that the municipality has in its possession photographic material, photographs and aerial photographs from the period around 1960, which prove that the volume of the hill above the beach was where it was now demarcated by the municipality. From 1963 onwards, he continued, some people started to rub the beach with various materials, in order to bring part of it to the height of the hill, for their own interests. Proof of what he says, said the mayor of Paralimni, is the fact that during the removal of debris were found dozens of tires, reinforced concrete and scrap metal, which were gradually installed in the period 1960-1970. "Still," said Mr. Pyrillis, "from the photos available to the municipality, it appears that at that time on the beach of Siren there was no vegetation from reeds and therefore this type of vegetation emerged through the operation attempted. then in the natural landscape ".
He also claimed that within days "trees will be planted in the area of the beach, which was cleaned and restored, and in a few years the beach will regain its well-known green character".
He also said that the rubble removed prevented the flow of water from the hill to the sea, favoring the phenomenon of erosion. On the issue of extending the landscape restoration operation, Mr. Pyrillis said that "this was done because the area occupied by the arbitrary placement of rubble in the area that was cleaned had not been foreseen".
Asked by the newspaper "Phileleftheros" if beds are to be placed by the municipality and also if a refreshment room will be created in the beach area created by the intervention of the Municipality of Paralimni, Mr. Pyrillis said that the Municipal Council is responsible for the final decision. , but he estimates that "the decision will be to place cots, because this will be required by the people". Regarding the creation of a refreshment room, Mr. Pyrillis was categorical that there is no such intention.
Reversing the fire he receives, Mr. Pyrillis said that "the Municipality of Paralimni did nothing but restore the landscape on the beach of Siren to its natural character." He added that while he did not do so, the municipality was criticized for not doing so. And now that he did, he is being criticized for doing it. "After all, what do those who criticize us want?"
