Scientists give hope for women suffering from cancer to become mothers through the method of in vitro fertilization…
This is made possible by freezing the ovarian tissue to minus 196 degrees Celsius and thawing it. Five women suffering from various forms of cancer have already had their ovarian tissue frozen in Greece, before undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy, in order to preserve their fertility. After the completion of their treatment, a transplant of the tissue in their ovaries takes place, as a result of which their hormonal restoration is possible.
According to the specialist in assisted reproduction, Mr. Constantino Panto, the method "has begun to spread timidly in the US and in Europe, with the result that at least 10 babies have been born after cryopreservation and ovarian tissue transplantation". He explains that this method is mainly aimed at women who have been diagnosed with cancer, since egg cryopreservation (a common method that also prolongs motherhood) is not suitable for expectant mothers due to their medical profile.
This new method comes to fill the gap in in vitro fertilization. The cost of removing the ovarian tissue and freezing them in liquid nitrogen, reaches 1.500 euros. Mr. Pantos notes that the material can be stored for at least five years.
