In the last year, more than 100 million euros have been paid as ransom to pirates

The possibility of armed guarding of the Cypriot ships is provided by a bill that was presented today before the Parliamentary Transport Committee for the fight against piracy…

The bill allows shipowners whose ships are registered in Cyprus to enter into agreements with private security companies to provide armed guards for the safety of ships, goods and personnel.

According to APE, due to the gap in the legislation and the escalation of piracy, the Cypriot registry has recently lost more than ten ships.

In the last year, 22 ships have been taken hostage and more than 100 million euros have been paid as ransom, while the total cost of world shipping due to piracy in the Indian Ocean has exceeded 12 billion euros.
