On February 8,9, 13 and XNUMX, the Turkish occupation army will fire again in the dead zone near Deryneia, according to information provided by the United Nations to Mayor Andros Karagiannis.
In his statements to KYPE, Mr. Karagiannis stated that "it seems that the intense written protest issued on Sunday by the Municipality of Deryneia regarding the explosions that were heard over the weekend in our area, had results. "Today we were informed in writing by the United Nations that on February 8, 9 and 13 the firing of anti-tank weapons by the occupying Turkish army will continue."
He added that "on Monday we had a telephone conversation with the Principal of A and B Primary School and a public kindergarten located near the dead zone. The two directors assured us that there is intense concern of parents and children from the deafening explosions that were heard on Saturday and yesterday Sunday, from the Monastiraki area, next to the occupied beach of Deryneia, due to shots fired by the occupying Turkish army ".
He also stated that "we also had a confirmation for the concern of the students and their parents from the members of the Central Student Council of the XNUMXnd Primary School of Deryneia, with whom we met in the morning at the Municipal Palace".
Answering a relevant question, Mr. Karagiannis said that "every six months, the term of Unicup in Cyprus is renewed, with the result that some people leave. The Municipality is trying to have meetings with the new officials of the Force that is in our area in order to inform them about the problems we face due to our proximity to the dead zone ".
However, he noted that "until they are informed of the problems, concerns and sensitivities of the people, the new United Nations officials, time passes, there is a new renewal of the mandate of the Force, with the result that some people are replaced again. This is a negative impact for both the Municipality and the citizens of Deryneia, since there is no communication and information on special issues such as the exercises of the Turkish occupation army ".
