The Israeli doctors who treated the unfortunate man warn that the infection from the earring can spread in the blood and reach the brain. Experts say that we should think very seriously before making such a decision anyway, since although it does not often lead to death, the earring on the tongue causes injuries to the teeth and mouth infections, while - less often - heart problems.
There are many possible complications, which can range from pain to swelling or broken teeth. Those who have an earring in the oral cavity may also experience receding gums or bleeding, adds Professor Daman Golsey, a scientific adviser to the British Dental Association, who recommends avoiding earrings in the mouth.
