The issue of the missing was discussed by Presidency Commissioner Fotis Fotiou and UK High Commissioner Matthew Kidd at a meeting on Monday, with Mr Fotiou seeking UK assistance to put pressure on Turkey to make a substantial contribution to solving this humanitarian problem.

According to an official statement, the Presidential Commissioner "pointed out that it is unacceptable and inhumane for the families of the missing to wait so many decades to be informed of the fate of their loved ones or to be handed a bone from the remains of their own people and asked for to consider that this is a complete clarification of their fate ".

"Mr Fotiou has asked for UK assistance to put pressure on Turkey to finally make a real contribution to resolving the humanitarian problem of the missing," he added.

Turkey, he said, "has a political, moral and legal responsibility to provide all the information it has about the fate of the Greek Cypriots missing from its archives and especially about the mass graves created on the battlefields by the meditations of the dead." as well as for the deliberate removal of relics from the primary burial sites ".

It is inconceivable and unacceptable for Turkey to date to refuse to implement the decisions of the ECtHR on missing persons, as well as other international organizations, he added.

Caged issues were also discussed during the meeting.

"For his part, Mr. Kidd assured that his country will continue to contribute to the efforts made to resolve the tragic problem of missing persons," the statement concluded.
