At a meeting of the parliamentary Commerce Committee on May 26, MPs and local officials complained to state authorities about delays in issuing permits for the construction of a marina in Ayia Napa.

However, the arrows of the deputies and the mayor of Ayia Napa, Giannis Karousou, should probably be aimed at the companies themselves, as they are the ones who have not submitted the necessary documents to issue the necessary permits.

"X" provided documents that demonstrate the shortcomings of the company-investor for the marina in Ayia Napa and cites them to correct the inaccuracies that were said in Parliament.

Specifically, after a meeting of the competent services of the state, the Local Authorities and the companies involved, it was found that:

  • The applicant has not yet applied for a modification of the terms, but intends to do so.
  • He has not completed a Master Plan that shows details of the constructions both of the original plan and of the additional 14.000 buildable meters.
  • Regarding his application for a permit for the execution of port works, it was clarified to him that several conditions are common, both for land and sea constructions, so the management of dredging waste should be satisfied accordingly, especially the construction site plans. etc.
  • Regarding the condition 12.4.7 which refers to the obligation of the applicant, to present a study of a natural model, before the issuance of a planning permission, the applicant informed that the islands will not be built in the end. In view of this development, and if it proceeds to a written briefing on this, then there is no question of application of the term.
  • Concerning terms which at first sight seemed to concern the applicant such as bird fauna monitoring plans, planting of native plants and protection of sensitive species that are not affected by growth, appropriate clarifications were given and satisfaction was expressed by him.
  • In the end it was agreed as follows: “The Applicant will submit the application for modification of terms to the Department of Urban Planning and Housing and at the same time will prepare and submit a special note / letter, in which he will describe in detail changes and modifications requested on the terms of our opinion ”.
  • In conclusion, the letter and other information are expected to be submitted for further consideration.

Another Natura area in danger

The Department of the Environment has concluded that this project has serious and irreversible effects, both on the species Charadrius leschenaultia (bird whistle) and on other species protected in the Natura 2000 area. Agia Thekla- Liopetri ".

In his opinion, which was issued on 13 January 2015, he also notes that this area joined the Natura 2000 network for the protection of another 18 species of birds, the conservation of species included in the "Red Book of the Flora of Cyprus" and the protection of natural habitats of the area.

Although it issued the environmental permit, it called on the company to take compensatory measures and inform the European Commission.

It is noted that the Commission has already received a complaint against the work of the Ayia Napa marina for violations of the Community directive on Natura areas, which it is investigating, as confirmed by competent sources in Brussels.

The investment is therefore in doubt, even if some were celebrating the agreement with the Egyptian businessman and the deposit.

It is recalled that the Natural Coastal Rescue Initiative had expressed strong disagreements over the construction of the marina, precisely because of the environmental importance of the area in which the investment is planned to take place.

He posed the reasonable question, why not expand the existing port of Ayia Napa, so that yachts are also served?
