The decision and announcement of the opening of the roadblock of Deryneia brings satisfaction to the residents of the area.

As the Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, stated, “we are very satisfied with the political decision taken today during the meeting of the Technical Committee for the opening of new roadblocks. This was a constant request of the people of Deryneia and for its promotion, a peaceful event was held last May by the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot forces and the opening of the roadblock of Deryneia ".

He added that "today the Turkish Cypriots accepted the proposal of the Greek Cypriot side to open the roadblock using the existing road, ie Famagusta Avenue leading to the Holy Zone and directly to Famagusta. We are not talking about creating a new road but about using the existing one where some technical work will be done, such as paving and widening the road, installing various services such as Police and Health Services and moving the Turkish army outpost, which is located in front of the roadblock ".

He added: "It is very likely that there will be no minefield in the area, but this will be confirmed by the United Nations soon. "For us, above all, it is the safety of the people who cross the road, and to say that we are ready to open the roadblock, we must give the United Nations some time to confirm that there is no minefield issue."

Mr. Karagiannis noted that "the Committee of Critical and Semi-Occupied Municipalities visited the President of the Republic last May and raised the issue of opening roadblocks between them and Deryneia. The reason that the roadblock of Deryneia opens first and before the rest is because both Communities demanded it urgently ".

He also said that "we are in full cooperation and consultation with the head of the e / k side in the Technical Committee Soto Zakhaios as well as with the Turkish Cypriots who are involved in the opening of the roadblock. This was something that was eagerly awaited by the people of Deryneia and finally after the silent efforts of the Municipality that were made in collaboration with all the involved bodies, the dream comes true ".

Asked to mention when the opening of the roadblock is expected, the Mayor of Deryneia said that "we are optimistic that within 2015 everything will be ready. "Based on what we have had from time to time from those involved in the case, immediately after the announcement for the opening of the Deryneia roadblock, it will be opened within two months".

Answering a relevant question, the Mayor of Deryneia said that "essentially the roadblock is the shortest road leading from Deryneia to Famagusta. It only takes two minutes to cross the road, which is about 800 meters ".
