The desire to return to occupied Achna was expressed today by the people of Achni on the occasion of tomorrow, the 43rd anniversary of the occupation on August 28, 1974, of Achna by the Turkish invaders.

The Day of Remembrance of Occupied Achna was organized by the President of the Community Council of Achna Nikos Vassilas and the President of the Community Youth Center of Achna Christodoulos Kountouretis.

Crowds gathered in the morning on the road Dhekelia - Famagusta, where in the presence of the icon of Agia Marina, the priests of the Community prayed for the return to Achna and the withdrawal of Turkish troops.

In his greeting, the Mayor of Achna, Nikos Vassilas, stated, among other things, that "today the occupied Community is showing its desire for a return. On August 28, 1974, the barbarian Attila, violating the truce, captured our beautiful village. Forty-three years later we gathered, just a few meters away from the ruined houses and our ruined church of Agia Marina to give the message that the people of Achni do not forget and continue to claim, no matter how many years pass, our occupied village ".

He added that "today 's event is the first in a series of actions aimed at reconnecting all the people of Achni wherever they are, so that we can keep the memory of Achna alive and maintain the relations of all those who do not live in the Community with their birthplace. ».

A poem was recited for Achna and at the end of the event a delegation of the Community Council went to Pyla where it delivered a resolution to a representative of the United Nations.

The resolution, signed by Nikos Vasilas and Christodoulos Kountouretis, states that on the occasion of tomorrow's black anniversary of the occupation of Achna by the Turks, "we Greek Cypriot refugees declare that the Cyprus problem is a problem of invasion and occupation and will be solved only with the complete withdrawal of the Turkish occupying forces and the settlers from the territory of the Republic of Cyprus ".

It added that "we urge the UN to act decisively to implement its resolutions and to make a substantial contribution to finding a just solution to the Cyprus problem." We, as members of the UN, demand equal treatment like all free citizens of the world, we demand the reclaiming of our property, we expect a solution with which we will coexist peacefully with our compatriots T / C as equal citizens of a democratic state ".

The resolution also states that "we urge the UN to exert its influence in Turkey to end the occupation, to abandon its divisive plans and intransigence in order to help find a just, functioning and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, which will allow to all refugees to return to their homes and property in safe conditions and with all human rights guaranteed ".

We expect the resolution to conclude "that the UN will use the appropriate violence against Turkey so that the occupied Achna is returned to its rightful inhabitants because it is desolate and uninhabited as a sign of goodwill from Turkey for the resumption of talks."
