The condition of the roads in several Communities of the free area of ​​Famagusta is desperate due to the defects in the Sewerage System of Kokkinochorion, since several roads repaired by the contractors continue to collapse.

In his statements to KYPE, the Mayor of Deryneia and President of the Sewerage Council of Kokkinochorion Andros Karagiannis stated that "the Municipality of Deryneia has since December in its coffers the 250 thousand euros announced by the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis during his visit to in July 2015 and we are now ready to start the final paving of the roads ".

However, he continued "unfortunately we can not use this fund since the Municipality of Deryneia has not yet received the work of the sewer system. The contractors are in the final stage of repairing the landslides that were observed on several roads and without this repair, we can not receive the project ".

Answering a relevant question, Mr. Karagiannis said that "the contractors are essentially correcting the mistakes they made during the execution of the project. The contractors were unable to correct the defects in the undergrounding of the pipelines, with the result that the project was not completed and the roads were in a miserable condition ".

He explained that during the final inspections carried out with a CCTV system, "hundreds of problem areas were identified that needed to be repaired, as a result of which new excavations were made and the suffering of the people continued. However, the mistakes and defects of the contractors continued in the repair of the problematic points, with the result that excavations need to be done again ".

Indicatively, he continued, "we have noticed signs on roads that have been hit three times so far. Specifically, on Omonia Street, one kilometer long, which is the parallel road of the central Eleftherias Avenue in Deryneia, we have noted 15 points that have subsided. We insist that we will not receive the project from the contractors until all these errors and defects are repaired, while this has the effect of delaying the total paving of the roads ".

He also stated that "all these problems that the free area of ​​Famagusta faces with the sewerage system have been brought before the Ministers of Finance and Interior. "Next week we will discuss the issue with the officials of the Department of Water Development in Nicosia to finally see who will bear the cost of repair, in case we receive the project and the roads continue to collapse."

To another question, Mr. Karagiannis answered that "we understand that some roads were built several years ago and the asphalt may have been damaged. However, the people must realize, despite the suffering that exists, that we must first receive the completed and properly the project and then proceed to the complete paving of the roads ".

At the same time, he stated that "one of the goals of the new Municipal Council for the next five years is that we will need to devote a lot of time to repair the road network of Deryneia".

Regarding the sewerage system itself, the President of SAK said that "at the moment work is still being done in Sotira, Frenaros and Liopetri. There is also the issue of the Biological Station in the area of ​​Achna that is pending before the Tender Review Authority since the offers from the companies for the construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant remain stagnant in the Authority ".

He explained that "while normally the Biological Station in the area of ​​Achna had to operate around the end of 2015, with the stagnation observed in the Tender Review Authority, the Station is expected to operate around 2020".

It is noted that the Sewerage System of Kokkinochorion covers the Municipalities of Deryneia and Sotira and the Communities of Achna, Avgorou, Vrysoula - Acheritos, Liopetri, Ormidia, Frenaros, Xylofagou and Xylotympos.
