This is how the Deryneia roadblock will serve

The announcement for the opening of the roadblock of the area, a roadblock requested by the e / k side, was shared by the Municipality of Deryneia with smiles.

The Mayor, Andros Karagiannis, explained that with the opening of the Deryneia roadblock, the residents of Paralimni, Ayia Napa and Sotira will be able to go to Famagusta in 5 minutes. "We are satisfied with the announcement that Famagusta Avenue will open and will lead from Deryneia, through Kato Deryneia and Agia Zoni, directly to Famagusta," he added.

He underlined that in this way the District of Famagusta will be stimulated, since the passage of tourists from the free areas to the occupied and vice versa will be done in two kilometers instead of 22 that are currently passed through the Strovilia roadblock.

"Now," he added, "one can go from Protaras to Famagusta, covering a distance of one kilometer."

Mr. Karagiannis said that with this development there will be a common benefit for both communities, as it will lead to an increase in trade and development in the region, especially with the movement of tourists. He added that the road should be repaired and widened, as it has not been used for decades.

Access to the sea via the Lefkas roadblock

The messages from the Community Leader Kalopanagiotis are also positive, as this community is the first to be located next to the occupied Lefka. The community leader, Giannakis Papadouris, stated that, although this roadblock favors the Turkish Cypriots more, there are still benefits for the wider region, as the traffic to the mountainous areas will increase, both from Turkish Cypriots and tourists.

He added that residents of mountainous areas will have access to the Morphou Sea in just 25 minutes.

The mayor of Pyroi is annoyed

At the same time, the mayor of Pyroi, Konstantinos Adamou, expressed his annoyance. "We are angry, frustrated, we feel betrayed because the opening of roadblocks was linked to the Pyroy issue," he said.

He stressed that he expects information from the government and if they do not receive satisfactory answers, it is possible that the Coordinating Committee for the Opening of the Pyroi roadblock, which consists of the communities of Athienos, Avdelleros, Pyroi, Aglantzia and Geri, will take dynamic measures.

As he explained, the opening of the Pyroi roadblock would make the route from Nicosia and Larnaca possible in just 25 minutes, connecting the area of Aglantizas and Kaimakli with the areas of Kosi, Athinainos and Avdellerou, which he would remove from the isolation.

Moreover, the Chairman of the Coordinating Committee for the Opening of the Pyroyou roadblock, Mayor of Athena, Dimitris Papapetrou, stated that the Commission will convene after being informed first about what was said at yesterday's meeting of the leaders of the two communities.

Anger from the Mayor of Kato Pyrgos

The Mayor of Kato Pyros, Andreas Michailidis, is also obviously annoyed by the fact that the calls for the opening of the Kokkina roadblock were not heeded.

He stressed that he had received assurances from the President that this roadblock was first on the agenda, however, it was not decided at the last Anastasiadis-Akinci meeting that it would be opened.

As he explained, this roadblock would connect Pyrgos with Pachyamos in just 5 minutes, instead of 35 minutes which is an existing route. At the same time, there would be an alternative route from Nicosia to Paphos, in a time of one hour and 40 minutes. "Our next step is to take other measures if they do not assure us of the opening", concluded Mr. Michailidis.

All open for new roadblocks

Government sources said that the announcement of the opening of other roadblocks is not ruled out soon, as it was said in the previous days, the announcements of MOE will be an evolutionary process.

"No one has said that Pyroy will not open," said a government source, adding that there were several roadblocks on the list.

Commenting on the fact that the two sides of the Kokkinos and Pyrou roadblocks show the argument from the Turkish side that they are in military zones, it was emphasized that nothing is ruled out and that
these issues are discussed in the technical committees.

"The discussion will continue for the rest of the roadblocks in the near future and there is a basis for both of these roadblocks," we were told.
