Ayia Napa Mayor: Call for legislation on noise pollution

Ayia Napa Mayor Giannis Karousos calls on the Parliament to legislate the big problem of noise pollution from the recreation centers that the tourist areas experience in the summer, at the same time calling on the Police to implement the provision for removing loudspeakers from noisy premises.

As Mr. Karousos stated, "with the start of the new tourist season, several business owners started noise pollution and unfortunately due to the lack of legislation, the problems are big. We expect from the House of Representatives to take the right decisions to solve this big problem which has become a scourge for the tourist areas ".

Answering a relevant question, Mr. Karousos said that "the Municipality of Ayia Napa itself now obliges the recreation centers to apply certain measurements regarding noise pollution. The owners of the centers have already decided that they will not implement these measurements and finally the issue will be examined before the Municipal Council of Ayia Napa in its next session ".

He also explained that "the Police has the right to give a 15-minute warning and then remove loudspeakers, thus imposing the order that should exist in the area. We ask the Police to proceed with the implementation of the specific measure, that is, to remove loudspeakers from the premises which are soundproofing ".

To another question, Mr. Karousos answered that "the citizens of Ayia Napa, upon receiving the operating license of the recreation center or any other facility, are obliged to apply the measurements we have announced for noise pollution, however few have responded. "Unfortunately, personal interests have come to the fore in this issue, but the Municipality will insist on the implementation of the measurements for noise pollution, an issue that will fight to the end".

However, he concluded "until the implementation of this measure, we expect and ask the Police to intervene in order to find a solution to the problem."
