The Cypriot and Local Governments were at the center of the meeting in Nicosia of the Chairman of the Union of Municipalities, Chairman of the Committee of Occupied Municipalities Alexis Galanos with the Assistant Prefect and Head of International Cooperation Missions of the French Ministry of Interior Deve Jean-Fran.
An announcement from the Union of Municipalities states that "Mr. Galanos informed Mr. Devemy about the developments in the Cyprus issue and the current situation, while special emphasis was given to the issue of security and guarantees".
In addition, Mr. Galanos, as Mayor of Famagusta, made special mention of the issue of the enclosed city of Famagusta, referring to the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
During the discussion, there was also an exchange of views on issues related to the modern European Local Government and more specifically in relation to the Local Government Reform in Cyprus.
Mr. Devemy showed particular interest in the operation of the Occupied Municipalities and the preservation of the social fabric of displaced citizens.
At the end of the meeting, the French official was given enlightening material for the looting of the Cultural Heritage in the occupied areas.
The meeting was attended on behalf of the Union of Municipalities by the Deputy Secretary of the Union of Municipalities Christos Hatzigiagou and the Associate of the Committee of Occupied Municipalities Chara Georgiadou. Mr. Devemy was accompanied at the meeting by the Police Attaché of the French Embassy, Lieutenant Colonel Xavier Chatillon and the Assistant Police Attaché Andreas Papatheodorou.
Mr. Devemy is in Cyprus on the occasion of the Conference on "Inter-Municipal Cooperation and Good Governance", organized by the Union of Cyprus Municipalities, the Union of Cyprus Communities and the Ministry of Interior in collaboration with the Center for Local Reform Expertise Local Government, within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
