Mayor of Ayia Napa on the course of tourism: "We continue responsibly, protecting the local economy and jobs"

At the initiative of the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannetou, a meeting was held on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Ayia Napa Town Hall with the participation of representatives of tourism organizations from Cyprus and abroad, with the aim of exchanging views and better coordinating actions in view of the new summer tourist season of 2026.

During the meeting, the prospects for the upcoming tourist season were discussed, as well as the challenges created by recent developments in the wider Middle East region, which affect the international tourism environment.

In his statement, Mayor Mr. Christos Zannetou stated that these developments cause reasonable concern in the international tourism sector, emphasizing, however, that with proper planning, cooperation and composure, the stability and dynamics of Ayia Napa's tourism product can be ensured.

As he noted, tourism is one of the most important pillars of the economy of the region and Cyprus, which is why it is necessary to take immediate support measures to protect jobs and the viability of businesses.

Mr. Zannetou particularly emphasized the importance of maintaining the operation of hotel units that already remain open, noting that "it is particularly important that the hotels that remain open continue to operate, so as not to give the impression abroad that we are facing problems in tourism."

At the same time, he underlined the need for substantial support for workers and businesses in the tourism sector, in order to avoid layoffs, work suspensions and further pressures on the market.

As he stated, "measures such as covering part of the wage costs by the state and extending unemployment benefits where required must be considered immediately, so that businesses and employees can return to work as soon as possible."
During the meeting, the common will of all involved bodies for coordinated actions that will contribute to the smooth development of the tourist season, while ensuring the quality of services and the trust of visitors, was confirmed.

Mayor Mr. Christos Zannetou also stressed the importance of collective effort, noting that "we must all work together to change the image of Ayia Napa and our Cyprus, otherwise the effects will be ripple effects in all sectors of the local economy and society."

"Our effort is to face this crisis with hard work, methodicality and love, supporting tourism, businesses and workers," he said.
Mr. Zannetou also emphasized that in times of uncertainty, unity, cooperation and collective responsibility constitute the greatest strength of local society, noting that "we continue with responsibility and determination, protecting the local economy and the jobs of our fellow citizens."

In closing, he stated that Ayia Napa remains a leading Mediterranean destination, ready to offer authentic experiences of hospitality, culture, nature and sea to visitors throughout the year.
At the same time, he thanked everyone who participated in the meeting for their presence and for the constructive dialogue that took place.
