The first Christmas tree in Greece was "lit" by Taxiarchis of Halkidiki!
Taxiarchis is a large settlement built on Mount Holomontas, in a wooded area, and has 1.070 inhabitants. It is a Municipal Department of the Municipality of Polygyros in the prefecture of Halkidiki.
The name of the village is due to the Archangel Michael, whose temple is located in it. Among other things, the village has taverns, a stone square, traditional chapels, traditional houses, hostels, a primary school and a kindergarten, as well as an active cultural association.
A significant part of the income comes from the cultivation of fir, for Christmas trees.
