Chikno Thursday and Clean Monday in English books of DG Gymnasium

Chikno Thursday. This is how the authors of the book of English of the XNUMXrd High School chose to translate Tsiknopempti into English. In fact, it seems that they were embarrassed about the performance of the terms of Halloween, since they also refer to Clean Monday as Clean Monday, which is also conceptually not so appropriate, although it is used.

Specifically, in the workbook for the students of DG Gymnasium, in the context of an exercise, eight words of celebration are given and students are asked to match, in two columns, the name of the celebration with what is being celebrated.

The translation of Tsiknopempti as Chikno Thursday is what causes more smiles as the choice to translate it into English only on Thursday and to render in Greek the first synthetic "tsikno" is strange.

For the word Chikno Thursday, the correct answer to the exercise in the book is "Eating roast meat Day", ie the day on which we usually eat grilled meat. Searching for the etymology of the word, an answer is found on wikipedia, where it is written that the Greek word Tsiknopempti is derived from the words tsikna (tsíkna, lit. "the smell of roasting meat") and Thursday (Pémpti, "Thursday") ». It may have been preferable for the exercise to choose Tsiknopempti, as Chikno Thursday confuses English and Greek.

As for Clean Monday, her performance in the book exercise is Clean Monday. This rendering is often encountered, although in this case the word "pure" has a metaphorical meaning. And that's why it probably surprises the good English speakers.

As the executives of the Institute of Educational Policy (IEP) reported to "K", they better attribute the meaning of Clean Monday to the celebration the terms Pure Monday, Ash Monday, Monday of Lent and Green Monday. As IEP executives reported to "K", These books are going to change, given that new curricula have been developed by the current leadership of the Ministry of Education. Books will be written on the new programs, which will be introduced experimentally in schools from 2022-2023.

For those who want to τους remember their student years and check their readiness in a very easy exercise, the other holidays given to students are: A. 28th of October, B. 25th of March, C. 25th December. D. 31st December, E. Apokries / Carnival, St. Easter. The phrases given to them to match the holidays are: 1. Christmas day, 2. Resurrection of Jesus Christ, 3. New Year's Eve, 4. Dressing up and having parties, 5. "NO" Day, 6. Revolution Day.
