Dramatic are the hours that the residents of northeastern Attica are experiencing for the second day with the fire that broke out at noon on Sunday in Varnavas as the front stretches for many kilometers with strong winds, prolonged drought and dense unburnt forest hindering the work of the 670 firefighters operating.

As the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, said, this is an "extremely dangerous" fire with the battle being fought under "dramatic conditions".

Shortly after 1 in the afternoon, the firefighters fought the battle in three places: After the Marathon lake in the direction of Afidnes, in Grammatiko towards Marathon, in Penteli from the peaks of Penteli in the direction of Military Hospital 414 while the picture was better in Nea Makri without, unfortunately, also missing the rekindlings in various places through which the fire passed on the "road" that traveled from Barnabas.

A total of 670 firefighters, 27 commando teams, 183 vehicles and 32 air (17 aircraft and 15 helicopters) are operating with the winds remaining today at 7 Beaufort until at least this afternoon

The winds helped the fire to travel a huge distance, burning everything in its path, with the length of the front reaching 30km. According to fire meteorologist Theodoros Giannaros, the fire in less than 12 hours "ran" a distance of more than 30-40km

Due to the fire, the settlements of Nea and Palaia Penteli were evacuated at around 5 am and a little later an order was given to evacuate the settlements of Drafi, Dioni, Damarasi Rafina, Dau Penteli, Agios Spyridon and Anatoli Nea Makri. At the same time, the Penteli Children's hospitals and the 414 Military Hospital were evacuated, as well as the monastery of Agios Ephraim in the area of ​​Anatoli and the monastery of Penteli.

At 09:25 a new message was sent from 112 for the area of ​​Drafi Dioni and Dasamari, calling the residents to move away via Marathonos Avenue towards Pallini.

Hundreds of releases from ELAS

ELAS has so far proceeded with the release of 250 people from the areas affected by the fire, while it issued a statement this morning in which it appeals to citizens to follow the instructions issued for the evacuation of areas and not to approach the fire-affected areas with their vehicles.

At the same time, policemen took the hose in their hands to put out small outbreaks that in these conditions could have a dramatic development.
