Greece: Why was it decided to lift the measures, despite the 100 dead a day

Despite the "hard indicators" remain high, the Greek government decided to relax the restrictive measures for the coronavirus

The easing of restrictive measures for the coronavirus was announced by the government on Thursday afternoon, through the Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris.

Specifically, as Mr. Plevris announced, the music and the normal opening hours of the restaurant are back, something that, however, will continue to concern seated customers.

At the same time, as he said, the number of spectators in the stadiums remains as it is, while what will change will be redefined next week.

The easing of these measures comes at a very critical time for the country, since the cases have stabilized, but they remain in very high numbers, as they "reach" 20.000 per day.

However, what scares me the most is the more than 100 deaths a day. At a time when Greece counts more than 23.000 of the deadly virus, since the beginning of the pandemic.

The above data raise many questions regarding the correctness of the decision, as well as the criteria of the experts, an issue that was also raised in the standard briefing for the coronavirus on Thursday.

Because it was decided to lift the measures

The reasons why the committee decided to suggest relaxation of the restrictive measures were explained by the Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and member of the Committee of Experts, Vana Papaevangelou.

"Watching the picture of the pandemic in recent weeks, we see a gradual de-escalation of new cases due to Omicron, and this is mainly due to the behavior of all of us who realized this great pandemic wave of Omicron and we all changed our behavior, each individually." he said initially.

"This has resulted in a significant de-escalation of cases, which has been stabilizing over the last week. Regarding the hard indicators and especially the number of intubations and deaths, we know that they follow. We see the new pipelines and the people who are lost, that they are people who were sick before Christmas. It makes sense to know that these indicators will decrease much more slowly. " he added.

"Obviously in no case do we intend to send a message that things are going well. Things are going the way they do in the rest of the world, we have the prevalence of an Omicron variant, which we hope - based on what we know - that the new cases will lead to fewer admissions and less burden on the health system, but right now people who are being treated are people who have been ill before and there is nothing we can do about it. They are primarily unvaccinated people. We confirm this every day that the vast majority of people who are lost are people who have not been vaccinated. And if one counts the people who are older and have not taken the booster dose, we reach almost 100% " he mentioned.

"In no case are we talking about a new era and complete de-escalation, we continue to wear our mask, we continue to have our minds, the virus is here among us, but we must also start living a little differently again" concluded Mrs. Papaevangelou.
