The university community of Patras is in deep mourning after the death of a 20-year-old student, who was hospitalized with fulminant meningitis at the University Hospital of Rio. The young man, originally from Athens, passed away despite the efforts of doctors, while studying at the University of Patras.
According to information from pelop.gr, the young man studied at the Department of Science and Technology Administration of the University of Patras and yesterday, Monday, he went to his examination and taught a lesson. Returning to the house where he lives with his twin sister, who studies Physics, he felt unwell. It was found that he had a fever of 38 and his sister, seeing the intense fatigue and some signs that appeared on his body, took him to the Emergency Department of the General Hospital of Patras. Unfortunately, the deterioration of the 20-year-old's health was rapid, resulting in his death today despite all the efforts of the doctors.
It is noted that the necessary measures have already been taken. The 40 students who taught with him yesterday at the University Amphitheater, as well as the professor who examined him, have already been invited to take the necessary chemoprevention measures, as well as the cleaning staff, while his contacts are being traced.
It is noted that other cases of meningitis have been recorded in the past among students of the University of Patras, while information from pelop.gr indicates the existence of other cases, which increases concerns both in the academic community and in the competent Public Health Authorities.
