Greece: He was sent for an x-ray to the… veterinary clinic

A young man from Tinos went to a veterinarian to get a chest x-ray, since the island's radiology is out of order. "A citizen wanted a routine x-ray, it was not for some urgent need and because he could not have this service in Tinos, they suggested he contact me."

With these words, the veterinarian Manolis Vorissis describes the incredible incident he was faced with. "I was not able to provide him with this service and that upset me. "My goal is to x-ray animals, dogs, cats and do my medicine."

The island's veterinarian was surprised to find that the chest x-ray requested by the young man was for him and not for a pet. "When I asked where I could do the x-ray, they told me either in Syros or to ask you if you can get an x-ray, it seemed a bit because I know your specialty, but if possible you will take me out of trouble," the young man told him. .

In fact, according to the doctor, this is not the first time that residents of the island need to have an X-ray, but this does not happen due to damage. "I knew Covid had passed on the island and they had a residual cough. "They could never have a chest x-ray."

The Health Center of Tinos, on the other hand, claims that it is waiting for a whole month for the approval for the replacement and reopening of the radiology. "The radiologist was damaged, that is, the light bulb 15/12 burned out. We are waiting for the approval to proceed with the replacement. It is essentially the bureaucracy that is in force in Greece and that, unfortunately, due to this, the existing problems are increasing ", says Theodora Papadopoulou, chairwoman of the Administrative Committee of K.Y. Of Tinos.

In short, the inhabitants of Tinos who will need to undergo an X-ray will have to emigrate to neighboring islands. "Unfortunately he has to go to another island, either to Mykonos or to Syros where you understand that this is a big problem because it could be a person who has a pneumonia."

"For us islanders this is a big Golgotha to go to another island, many times you can miss a whole day to get a simple x-ray. "It is sad and even outrageous. X-rays are a basic medicine," says the vet. The island has long had problems with the health system with permanent residents not having access to simple medical procedures.
