Dramatic hours in northeastern Attica as the fire that started from Varnavas at noon on Sunday "evolves rapidly and has entered the Pentelian mountain" as announced by the press representative of the Fire Department shortly before 6 this morning "despite the superhuman efforts of all its forces political protection".
The anxiety is exacerbated by the fact that, as the meteorologists said and the representative of the fire department also said, a further strengthening of the winds is expected in the next hours which have already helped the fire to travel a huge distance burning everything in its path with the length of the front far exceeds 20 km.
According to fire meteorologist Theodoros Giannaros, in less than 12 hours the fire "ran" a distance of more than 30-40 km.
Watch video from Dionysus on Monday morning
As Mr. Vathrakogiannis from the fire department said, 510 firefighters with 16 teams of forest rangers and dozens of vehicles are fighting the fire fronts. At the same time as the first light of day they started flying in two circles over the fronts, a total of 32 aerial vehicles, 17 aircraft and 15 helicopters.
The biggest problem is located in Dionysos, with the flames reaching houses, Palaia and Nea Penteli and Marathona, with the local winds making the work of the fire brigade difficult, while at dawn the order was given to evacuate the Penteli Children's Hospital with 29 children being transported at the children's "Aglaia Kyriakou" and "Agia Sophia"

Fire in Attica: ELAS vehicles drive past the flames in Marathon
A firefighter was injured
A firefighter operating in Marathon was taken by an ambulance from the Nea Makri Health Center with burns on his arms and legs and the doctors decided that he should be taken to the 251 General Aviation Hospital by EKAV ambulance. According to information, the firefighter has 2nd degree burns which must be treated by plastic surgeons.
"At least 20 houses have burned in Varnavas, one inside the settlement. If the aerials are not raised the fire will burn for five days. From the hiker they cannot approach her. Only when the flames are low will they be able to. We have seen houses, cars and animals burn. The fire is very strong," Panagiotis Katsikis, a volunteer firefighter in Varnavas, told MEGA.
The forces had increased. At the fronts of the fire, shortly after 2 am, 470 firefighters, 16 groups of pedestrian units, 132 vehicles, volunteers, water-carrying OTAs and project machinery were operating. From the air until the last light of day, 16 aircraft and 13 helicopters were mobilized, both for their coordination. Project machinery and water carriers of the Attica Region and the Armed Forces provide assistance in the extinguishing work.

In particular, the fiery front which started from Barnabas and has caused damage to houses, is moving with great momentum in the ravines and is heading towards Dionysus. The firefighting forces had been reinforced and the main lines of defense shortly after 21.00 had been deployed, to the north, in Mikrohori Oropou, to the east, in Grammatiko and to the south, in Stamata, with the aim of being able to stop the fire.
In a parallel development, a Fire Department vehicle was completely burned in Varnavas, however, according to information, the firefighters were not in danger.
According to the press representative of the Fire Department, Mr. Vassilis Vathrakoyiannis, the fire started at 15.02:8 p.m. and quickly grew in size due to the strong winds in the area with gusts of 25 Beaufort. In fact, the flames exceeded XNUMX meters high!
In Kalendzi Marathon, according to Mega, no houses were burned, however fortunately the area had been evacuated earlier.
