An earthquake occurred early Friday morning off the coast of Crete.
According to the Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5,7 on the Richter scale, and occurred in the sea area 7 kilometers southwest of Goudouras, Lassithi.
The focal depth is located at 5 kilometers.
The deputy governor of Lassithi, Yannis Androulakis, told ERT that the earthquake was long and was particularly felt on the island.
"The earthquake was long and was felt throughout southwestern Crete, I have reports from Sitia to Heraklion. We are awaiting developments regarding any problems, civil protection is on standby."
The president of the OASP, Efthymios Lekkas, also spoke to ERT about the earthquake.
As he stated: "We have an earthquake south of Lasithi. The first magnitude is 5,5 in the sea area at a depth of 5 kilometers. We have not yet seen the exact data of the earthquake because it is the automatic system, I believe that it is an earthquake that would have been felt widely in Crete and Kasos and Karpathos, but we do not have more data at the moment. We are essentially waiting for the recordings to be able to assess the whole situation.
It is near Cherso, it must have been particularly felt throughout Lassithi and the rest of Crete. The exact size and exact location are currently being calculated, at 5 kilometers the earthquake is superficial, but we will know the individual details and the exact data in a little while."
Speaking in Crete, ERTnews correspondent Giorgos Lambrakis stressed that there is no report from the fire services in the area about damage, while there is a large sequence, with aftershocks, with characteristic magnitudes of 3,8, 3,5, 3,2, 3,6, while the focal depth of the main earthquake was 9,7 kilometers.
