Georgia Adeilini issued an order for an urgent preliminary examination into the EODASAAM report on the Tempi tragedy and the role of the technical advisor to the victims' families, Kostas Lakafosis, following a prosecutor's order.
After the fiasco of the EODASAAM finding on the Tempi, and after the confirmation of the information that the University of Ghent never conducted a substantive investigation and relied on the data and calculations of the EDAPO (Independent Expert Families Investigation Committee), a key member of which is the mechanical engineer and technical advisor to the families of victims, Kostas Lakafosis, the Areopagus requests that "the circumstances under which the National Organization for Air and Railway Accidents and Transport Safety (EODASAAM) was included in the finding on the Tempi case, which was announced on 27-2-2025, be investigated, a conclusion according to which (with the contribution of the Universities of Ghent and Pisa) it was considered a probable cause of the pyrosphere, which was created immediately after the collision of the trains, an unknown volatile flammable liquid of at least 2,5 tons, allegedly carried by the commercial train and which was not related to the trains' engines or their declared cargo"
According to the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, the aim of the investigation will be to "verify ex officio prosecuted criminal acts, such as, for example, undue influence on judicial officers (Article 167A of the Criminal Code), following the denial by representatives of the aforementioned Universities of Ghent and Pisa of the aforementioned conclusion attributed to them in the report."
At the same time, he asks for an investigation into the role played by EDAPO and the technical advisor to the families of Tempi victims, Kostas Lakafosis, in formulating the conclusion.
The Supreme Court's announcement in detail
Supreme Court Prosecutor Georgia Adeilini sent today the following order to the Director of the Athens First Instance Prosecutor's Office:
To
The Director of the Athens Court of First Instance Prosecutor's Office
We request that an urgent preliminary examination be carried out in order to investigate the circumstances under which the conclusion of the National Organization for Air and Rail Accidents and Transport Safety (EODASAAM) on the Tempi case, announced on 27-2-2025, included a conclusion according to which (with the contribution of the Universities of Ghent and Pisa) an unknown volatile flammable liquid of at least 2,5 tons, allegedly transported by the commercial train and which was not related to the engines of the trains or their declared load, was considered as a possible cause of the pyrosphere, which was created immediately after the collision of the trains.
The above investigation is deemed necessary to verify ex officio prosecuted criminal acts, such as, for example, undue influence on judicial officers (article 167A of the Criminal Code), following the denial by representatives of the aforementioned Universities of Ghent and Pisa of the above conclusion attributed to them in the report.
It should also be investigated, among others, what role the Independent Expert Investigation Committee (EDAPO) and the technical advisor to the families of Tempi victims, Kostas Lakafosis, played in formulating the above conclusion.
Please inform us about it.
The Prosecutor of the Supreme Court
