"Everyone wants to live, you know... I want to live too. I have young children and I want them to grow up. And I will raise them. I am made of plutonium," Alexis Kougias said in January 2023 in a television interview.
Two years later, the distinguished criminologist is fighting the most difficult battle of his life, intubated in the Metropolitan's intensive care unit, while rumors of his deteriorating health had begun to flare up in recent days.
His last television appearance was a month ago, when the image of the exhausted criminologist making statements after a trial shocked the entire country, making many people wonder about his health.
He himself was convinced that he would defeat cancer and had even said so, but the deterioration of his condition in recent weeks was rapid, resulting in his admission to a private hospital.
His two children, Christos and Maira Kougia, confirmed the rumors that had been circulating about their father for days in a post on social media, writing: "Regarding reports regarding our father's health, we confirm that his condition has indeed been very critical lately, without giving further details. We ask you to respect our privacy and not pressure us to make statements on the subject on television. We expect, even now in these difficult times, that you will show respect to our family and to those close to our father."
A short time later, Evi Vatidou's ex-wife also posted a post with her children on this very serious issue concerning their family, in which she states: "Due to the critical health condition of my ex-husband, Alexis Kougias, I have nothing to add, except what my children announced. Thank you for your interest."
The deterioration
Few knew when the trial of Dimitris Lignadis ended that Alexis Kougias had been diagnosed with embryonic stage lymph node cancer, since he chose not to announce it to his children or to his law firm associates, according to the announcement he had issued two and a half years ago.
He chose to first finish the cases he had taken on, such as the murder of Eleni Topaloudi and that of Alkis Kampanos, and then enter the operating room for the operation in July 2022.
After a month's rest, he returned to his duties, since he never thought of dropping, even for a moment, the exhausting pace of work in which he had indulged for decades.
Unfortunately for him, the cancer returned and his health condition has deteriorated rapidly in recent times, resulting in his admission to the Metropolitan, where he is fighting the most difficult battle of his life.
