Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to make announcements regarding the mandatory vaccination in specific occupational sectors tomorrow.
As Government Spokeswoman Aristotle Peloni noted today, during the briefing of the political authors, the new outbreak of cases recorded in several areas of Greece makes it necessary to adopt a new range of epidemiological protection measures.
"It is also necessary to move to the third phase of our vaccination strategy. Thus, until tomorrow, the Prime Minister will announce the decisions of the government regarding the obligation of vaccination in specific fields, as well as the framework of operation of the closed spaces from the end of this week ", noted Ms. Peloni.
As she stated, "a new outbreak of the pandemic is manifested in many Regional Units of the country, including Attica, Crete and the North Aegean. Its main feature is the significant increase in cases among young people ". Ms. Peloni noted that 75% of new cases affect people under the age of 34, while the main tumor is found in the ages of 15 to 24 years. In areas with high vaccination coverage, the majority of new cases are young people aged 15 to 19, she explained.
"Regarding the Delta mutation, it is noted that 70% of the strains were found in people under the age of 40. "Of all the cases with the new mutation, 13% had to be hospitalized, none of which was fully vaccinated", continued Ms. Peloni.
Insisting on the importance of vaccination, the government spokeswoman stressed that data from the United Kingdom and Israel, where the "Delta" mutation is already prevalent, show that vaccinated people are protected and rarely get seriously ill or need treatment.
Referring to the progress of vaccinations in Greece, Ms. Peloni noted that "already, the vaccinations have reached 9.230.000, with more than 5.240.000 citizens having made at least one dose and over 4.250.000 having completed their vaccination .
