Dead babies in Amaliada: The 24-year-old describes how she experienced the deaths

The 24-year-old describes the deaths of infants in Amaliada

amaliada Amaliada, Dead infants

At a time when the authorities are trying through testimonies and laboratory tests to establish what exactly has happened to the dead babies in Amaliada, 24-year-old Irini, who was present at all the deaths, describes how she lived their last moments.

In particular, speaking to MEGA, he states:

The first death

February 4, 2021. The then 21-year-old Irini is taking care of a friend's daughter when the baby suddenly has difficulty breathing. “He didn't tell me about shortness of breath that he made a sound and couldn't breathe. As happened to her two and to the third in Amaliada," the mother of the 6-month-old infant told Mega.

Irini, for her part, maintains that the child was facing health problems, and for this reason he was also receiving special medication.

-Her child had epilepsy. He was taking some home medication. And even she, until yesterday when we spoke, did not understand what had happened. Everything came out clean.

-And you were present again.

- I wasn't exactly present...

The infant's mother, on the other hand, insists that only Irini was at home with the infant that afternoon.

The doctors then told the unfortunate mother that her baby was already dead when she arrived at the hospital, with the tragic outcome attributed to sudden death.

The second death

June 19, 2022. 22-year-old Irene, who 19 days before became a mother for the first time, experiences the same nightmare again. Her baby, just 19 days old, "passes out" completely unexpectedly in his crib.

"Something happened that night, we don't know how and what. My mother tells me to get the ambulance straight away. By the time we got to the health center the child had died," said Irini.

"It was night she takes me and says mommy the baby is not well, it makes a strange sound like it's blackening, it's cold, I tell her call the ambulance quickly and I'm coming too. I went to the health center, I never caught the child", described Irini's mother.

The grandmother's words that the baby was already frozen before the ambulance was called are also confirmed by Soumon, Irini's roommate at the time who remembered in chilling detail what happened that night at home. "He talks to mom for an hour in the evening. Irene, what's the problem... She wasn't answering... I opened the door, turned on the light and saw the baby, that's how it happened... I tell her what happened, she says I don't know... That's the baby and that's how it went... She stretched out...".

“The first child also sat in the incubator... First he sat in the incubator and then he came home. They told me to do an EKG. I made an appointment but he didn't make it," says Irini.

The infant's death was attributed to possible pneumonia, with authorities ruling out foul play.

The third death

October 17, 2023. Irene also loses her second child, two months after his birth. The 24-year-old will say that this baby, unlike the first, was healthy, but in mid-September 2023, he started having seizures. "Later he made some judgments. The health center sent us to Patras. They put it on intensive care, I had to go every other day to see it."

-How did you know that the child is not well and left for Karamandanio? Did he have a fit?

– Yes. She rolled her eyes, she was kind of shaking over there, she was like a feather completely. The ambulance was called and went inside.

He stayed in Karamandanio for 3-4 days. The doctors decide to send the baby to Hagia Sophia for further tests, as apart from a hematoma in the eye they could not find anything else.

Tests are thorough with doctors unable to find what is causing the seizures. "They started taking exams. They came out clean. They said he had epilepsy, but he didn't have epilepsy," noted Irini.

The baby remains in the Athens hospital for almost a month. On October 17, 2023, the last major episode before ending takes place. Irene who was with the baby in the ward had just gotten up to make the milk when suddenly the monitor rang. "The machines are banging... by the time I got to the door his heart stopped," as the 24-year-old herself has said.

After the second death of her baby, there was an intervention by the prosecutor, while at the same time the process of genetic testing began with the doctors estimating that the death of the second baby was probably related to the epileptic episodes she was experiencing.

The fourth death

August 5, 2024. It is the day that the fourth and last baby death occurred in the presence of the 24-year-old. Irini and the baby's mother are at home playing with little Panagiotis, when suddenly the baby has trouble breathing.

"I stayed with the baby in the living room and Calliope went to the next room to get something," said Irini.

"Until I went to another room and came back, I saw that he was not breathing well. He was in his pram in the living room. I did three minutes. I immediately embraced it to see what I could do. My friend was there and she took it from me to save it," said the mother of little Panagiotis.

"I took it out of her hands, put it on the couch and tried to give it CPR."

The two women claim that when they took the baby in a private car to the Amaliada Hospital, he was alive. In contrast to the doctors who state with certainty that the 15-month-old baby they received was dead at least 30 minutes earlier.
