The young beak whale (Ziphius cavirostris), which had appeared last Saturday, January 29, in the shallows of Selinia bay in Salamina after successive appearances in the past off the coast of Attica, was found dead this morning by the Port Authority of Salamison on the coast of Klamra. on the east side of the island.

A boat of the Greek Navy, which for the last 24 hours has been conducting patrols around the island of Salamis in consultation with the political leadership of the Ministry of Environment and Energy for the monitoring and possible resurgence of the zifi, located the marine mammal at the specific point.

Immediately, as provided by the relevant protocols, a team of veterinarians from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) was mobilized as well as specialists for the proper transport of the animal to a safe place, in collaboration with the Municipality of Salamis, in order to perform necropsy and necropsy. biological samples for the performance of specialized laboratory tests, based on the relevant circular of the Animal Health Department of the Ministry of Rural Development for actions on cases of dead wild aquatic animals. The findings that will emerge will make it possible to detect any other pathological problems, in addition to those that had already been clinically identified and confirmed in the laboratory in the previous days.

In the context of the doctrine of One Health, the investigation will examine the possible presence of diseases related to both animal health and public health, in accordance with international protocols and guidelines of the World Health Organization. of Animals (OIE).

The necropsy-necropsy is supervised by the professor of the School of Veterinary Medicine, AUTh, Natassa Komninou, who participates institutionally in the Scientific Committee to support the operation of the nationally coordinated monitoring network for the eruptions of marine fauna species, which , Rural Development, the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (ELKETHE) as well as the thematic environmental organizations, ARION, ARCHELON, MOM and PELAGOS.

The Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, George Amyras, stated: the injured and weak mammal in life, unfortunately the young whale did not make it. "We knew from the first clinical and hematological examinations performed on the whale that the results were not encouraging, but we did what was humanly possible to save it."
