Former Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, recently announced his resignation from his position as Member of Parliament.
In his announcement, Mr. Tsipras notes that this is a decision of conscience as "I cannot and do not want to maintain the office of MP, with all the privileges this entails, when I feel that my participation, especially with the special status of the former Prime Minister, does not offer anything substantial to those who trusted me. Because I cannot and do not want to participate formally in a Parliament that, democratically stripped, with the responsibility mainly of the majority, is unable to perform the role that the Constitution mandates and the citizens demand."
At the same time, Mr. Tsipras emphasizes that he is resigning as a SYRIZA MP but not from politics: "I do not believe in Messiahs, nor in party laboratory constructions. However, I believe in the power of the popular movement that fights collectively for social justice. I believe in the will and actions of the many. With them, their needs and hopes, I am determined to meet. I want to address my comrades, to all those with whom we have walked together until now and shared struggles, anxieties, hopes and dreams. We will not be rivals. And perhaps soon we will travel together again to more beautiful seas," he notes, among other things.
It is noted that recently there has been information that Mr. Tsipras is preparing the establishment of a new political entity or an initiative to unify the progressive opposition parties.
