Journalist Spyros Karatzaferis has passed away, according to the statement made by the deceased's brother and former president of LAOS, Giorgos Karatzaferis.
As he himself stated on Parapolitika 90,1, "he passed away late at night. It's shocking for me as I am the little brother who followed in his footsteps. I am devastated," mentioning how he was one of the leading figures in journalism and one of the greatest reporters of the last 60 years.
Who was Spyros Karatzaferis?
Spyros Karatzaferis was a Greek journalist. He was born on 24 February 1938 in the village of Potamia in the province of Megalopolis, Arcadia prefecture, and grew up in the Amphithea of Paleo Faliro. His younger brother is the journalist and politician Giorgos Karatzaferis, who has served as a member of parliament and leader of a political party. He graduated from the "Omiros" School of Journalism, which was directed by Academician Spyros Melas, and began his journalistic career in 1959 at the newspaper "Vradyni", in police reporting (1959-62). This was followed by Ethnos (1962-68, under the direction of Yannis Kapsis), Apogevmatini (1968-75) and Eleftherotypia (1975-88).
He particularly distinguished himself in political reporting and investigative-revealing journalism at Eleftherotypia, in the early years of the Post-Coalition period, with revelations and publications of secret state plans and documents of the Armed Forces and the secret services. Karatzaferis' revelations caused great damage to the then Karamanlis government, and he found himself accused many times, with Evangelos Giannopoulos as his lawyer. His disputes with the then Minister of National Defense Evangelos Averoff and the then Minister of Public Order General Anastasios Balkos were mainly known.[
In 1988, he left Eleftherotypia and collaborated with the well-known businessman Socrates Kokkalis in the publication of the newspaper Epikaerita (1988-91), of which he became director and editor-in-chief. In 1990, he also began publishing the weekly newspaper "48 Hours", while at the same time publishing the military magazine "Defense Issues", in collaboration with retired Air Force Wing Commander Yannis Marinakis. Later, he was the publisher of "Athinaiki", as well as "Sfina".
In television, he worked at ERT, YENED, Star Channel (where he was news director for a number of years), Teleasty, Extra Channel, etc. In radio, he hosted a show on Flash 96 for a number of years.
