The legendary Mimis Domazos, who glorified Greek football with the Panathinaikos jersey, breathed his last on the morning of Friday, January 24, passing into immortality.
Mimis Domazos passed away at the age of 83 after a health problem.
The career of the "General"
Mimis Domazos started playing football in the local fields next to the Panathinaikos stadium and at the age of 13 he got a card from Amyna Ampelokipon, declaring a false age in order to be able to play. His father was a health worker originally from Samos and his mother was a nurse of Asia Minor origin. Soon his name began to be heard in football circles and attracted the interest of Panathinaikos. Domazos' unofficial debut with the Greens as a right winger took place in a friendly match against AEK (0-2) for the Christmas Cup, which was held on December 26, 1958. In 1959, the then coach of the "Greens", Svetislav Glisovic, suggested his acquisition, and at the age of 17 he was transferred to Panathinaikos.
He had a great career with the “clover” and is rightly considered one of the top footballers to ever wear the Athenian club’s jersey. At Panathinaikos he played in a total of 502 league matches, a feat that ranks him first in terms of appearances in the history of the “greens”. His highlight was his participation in the 1971 European Cup final at Wembley, against the top team of the time in Europe, Ajax of Johan Cruyff. That year he was voted the tenth best player in Europe, with Johan Cruyff first.
With Panathinaikos he won a total of 13 titles and was the team's captain for approximately 15 years.
He played for AEK from 1978 to 1980, winning a championship. In 1980, he returned to Panathinaikos, with whose jersey he wanted to retire from active play.
In total, he has recorded 536 appearances in the championship (with Panathinaikos and AEK) and is in first place of all time in appearances and despite the fact that more than 30 years have passed, he remains at the top of the relevant table. With Panathinaikos and AEK he won a total of 14 titles.
In the national teams
He has been capped 50 times by Greece and has scored 4 goals, while for several years he held the captain's armband. His debut with the blue and white jersey took place on December 2, 1959 at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium against Denmark.
On November 11, 1980, a friendly match against Australia was held at the same stadium, in which he was honored for his many years of contribution to the national team and to Greek football in general.
In this particular match, he was named top scorer, making him the oldest player to ever score for Greece (he would have turned 39 in less than three months).
At that time, he was second in participations in the history of the Greek national team, behind Mimis Papaioannou.
