The 26-year-old Azerbaijani man who was arrested in Souda on charges of espionage was temporarily detained, with the agreement of the investigator and prosecutor, after his plea on Wednesday afternoon.
As ERT reports, despite the revealing incriminating evidence, he is not at all cooperative with the authorities, and he does not accept having his fingerprints taken. The investigations are also focusing on whether he is a member of a wider network, but also on whether he is related to his compatriot, who was arrested in Cyprus for espionage.
The 26-year-old denies the felony charges against him and insists that he is not a spy, but a tourist. He is due to give explanations today to the competent investigative authority in Chania. A translator has been summoned to the courts, where he was brought shortly after 10 am on Wednesday, and a lawyer has been appointed for him, and his arraignment process began around 12 noon.
According to the EYP, he was highly trained in espionage and adhered to all the conspiracy rules. ERTNews reports that the young spy arrived in Athens on June 17, the next morning he traveled by ferry to Chania and rented a hotel room for a month, paying 1.500 euros in cash. He requested a view of the port of Souda.
It is noted that in 4 days, Azeros took at least 5.000 photos of the Souda aeronautical base and the ships located at the naval station.
In the laboratories, they are also looking for material that may have been deleted from a memory card, a mobile phone and the camera that were found in his room.
The digital fingerprints may lead the EYP and the police to identify the person who ordered and received the 5.000 photos taken by the 26-year-old Azerbaijani. The person who ordered will also lead the country with which he was collaborating.
Greek authorities are investigating whether he had contact with his 40-year-old compatriot who was arrested for espionage in Cyprus.
