Firefighters battled the flames all night long to extinguish the fire, which broke out on the evening of Sunday, July 30, 2023, in a forest area near the village of Katavasis, northwest of Chios, and quickly took on large proportions. Shortly after 1 in the morning, a message was sent - through 112 - to the residents of the Dieicha and Katavasis areas, in order to move away to Volissos.
125 firefighters with 20 vehicles and 3 groups of pedestrian units are operating at the scene, with the assistance of volunteer firefighters and local water bodies. Also, 28 foresters from Athens and another 9 from Mytilini have been assisting in the extinguishing operation since dawn, and they managed to demarcate it while shortly after 5:30 the order was given to begin the drops and aerial means.
The positive thing is that the strong winds have stopped and so the work of the fire brigade is easier.
According to the Fire Service of Chios, the fire was caused by a traffic accident that occurred at the intersection of the road axis Chios-Volissos with Dieucha. There were three people in the car, two men and one woman, and they were taken to Chios hospital with minor injuries.
