The time for her voice to be heard has arrived for Roula Pispirigou, who began her defense in the trial for the deaths of her two children, Malena and Iris, by completely denying the serious charges she faces.
"I deny the indictment in its entirety. I categorically declare my innocence. I have not killed any of my three daughters, Malena, Irida and Georgina, who passed away today," the accused stated and proceeded to describe her childhood and her parents' divorce, saying that she did not experience any tension during the divorce.
On the day of the 3rd anniversary of the death of the Daskalakis family's firstborn daughter, an event that was the spark for developments in the case that shocked the entire country, the accused mother took the stand, answering the court's questions about her life and her acquaintance with the children's father.
"My father had contact when he wanted to, and when he didn't want to, he didn't. My mother and our grandparents tried. As a child, I was sad that I didn't see my father often, but I saw that my mother was better. This calmed me down inside, it calmed me down," the accused described.
The accused accepted the president's questions about her knowledge of nursing and the first aid seminars she had attended.
President: Have you been trained in administering medications?
Defendant: Theoretically yes, in our books. In practice, the law for secondary school nurses, like me, prohibits it.
President: Why didn't you receive your internship completion certificate?
Defendant: Because I gave up, because my best friend had a car accident that cost her her life. For about 20 days I was there, outside the intensive care unit where my friend was hospitalized.
President: What courses did you take at the Red Cross?
Defendant: I took first aid classes. I learned how to perform CPR, the drowning man's grip, how to deal with snake bites, how to protect someone who has a broken limb.
President: The CPR you learned to do?
Defendant: In a mock-up, an EKAB rescuer showed us how to do it. How to pinch the nose to give air through the mouth, how to lift the head, how to apply chest compressions with the hands. All of this, of course, while we had called EKAB, which is the first thing we should have done.
A visibly emotional Roula Pispirigou referred to the death of her grandmother, who had been facing chronic problems and passed away in 2012.
"My grandmother's death was the first death I experienced. It hurt me a lot. We were all devastated in the family. They were both role models for me. They were the model of the Greek family. Sunday dinner, rules that had to exist, "come in front of the fireplace and tell me what you have, who made you sad." They chased my sister to drink her milk. Classic grandparents, classic mom, only I didn't have a classic dad."
The accused described the suicide attempt after her grandmother's death as a spur-of-the-moment recklessness, which she attributed to her closed-off nature.
"I try to appear so strong, to the point of being called a bitch, but the medical file I gave you has the results. Everything comes out in my body. I am alone, I am completely alone. I try to show that nothing bends me. I am ironic, I am outspoken. But I may regret it the next minute. I am not impulsive, I just keep everything inside and I will never show it. And I will take it out psychosomatically at some point," she said.
In the courtroom, in addition to Roula Pispirigou's mother and relatives, her ex-husband, Manos Daskalakis, is also watching her defense.
