The state mechanism remains on alert for the intense seismic activity in the Cyclades, with scientists expressing the assessment that the phenomenon has not yet reached its peak.
A 4,3 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 05:35 in the sea area south of Amorgos, according to data released by the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens. It is worth noting that the earthquake is described as "weak" by the Institute.
The 4,3 Richter magnitude earthquake was centered 27 km southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos.
Six weak earthquakes above 3 on the Richter scale were recorded within an hour. From 12:59 midnight on Thursday until 01:41, earthquakes of 3,7R, 3,2R, 3,3R, 3,6R, 3,5R and 3,4R were recorded, all in the sea area between Santorini and Amorgos. In addition, a 3,8 Richter earthquake was recorded off the coast of Santorini at 04:10 in the early hours of Friday.
From Sunday, January 26th to Tuesday, February 4th, over 7.700 earthquakes were recorded in the Santorini-Amorgos region, including more than 6.000 with a magnitude of more than one, the Seismology Laboratory of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) reported yesterday, Thursday.
The Municipality of Thira in Santorini has been declared in a state of emergency
The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has decided that the municipality of Thira should be placed in a state of emergency due to the continuous earthquakes recorded between Santorini and Amorgos.
In detail, the decision states that it was decided to declare a state of emergency in the Municipality of Thira, to address the emergency needs and manage the consequences resulting from the seismic activity.
The same decision states that its proclamation begins on February 1 and will last for one month.
Specifically, the decision states:
"We decide to declare a State of Emergency for Civil Protection in the Municipality of Thira, in the Regional Unit of Thira, in the South Aegean Region, to address the emergency needs and manage the consequences resulting from the seismic activity that has been occurring recently in the above area. This declaration will be in effect from February 1st and will last for one month, i.e. until March 1st."
